Web 2.0 Marketing Strategies 7

But before you get too excited and start trying to generate bookmarks all over the place pointing to your site, it’s only fair to warn you that there is one lethal weapon that can kill your web presence. It’s called spam, and it is something you never ever want to do.

Whenever you post a comment or send out an email, make sure it is offering valuable content and information. Make sure your content is user friendly, and not just for search engines.

If you are participating on forums, bide your time and become a sensible expert, rather than post once and then just vanish. People can smell spam a mile off, and resent it.

Amazingly, even people who actually double-opt in to your email list will complain about you emailing them! So again, make sure you are offering good, solid content, not just links to buy stuff. If you are selling tangible products as an affiliate, take the trouble to write a review.

The biggest mistake you can make is to create your bookmarks for the search engines, and not for the people reading your site. Social bookmarking is for the entire community of readers to enjoy and benefit from. Nobody likes someone who is just there for the adverts or backlinks. And remember, people are voting for you (or against you) all the time.

Now that you know how important it is to bookmark your website, I guess you’re going to get busy doing just that. But time is money, so first of all, you might consider getting a college student to do this for you, and second of all, some have higher value than others, so look for the top 20 or so on Google and go for the ones you have heard of and might be inclined to use, not the obscure ones.

Follow the rules, and you will soon see traffic coming your way.

One final way to position yourself as an expert is to add information on Wikipedia, create things like a Squidoo lens or a Congoo area, and become an ‘expert’ in your field.

There are literally billions of websites out there at the minute, and that is in the English language alone. If you want to raise yourself above the crowd, master social networking and social bookmarking, offer valuable free information and value for money on your paid products, and soon you will be the expert in your niche everyone wants to know more from.
