Web 2.0 Marketing Strategies 5

Social bookmarking

If you run a website, you already have an idea of the rush that webmasters feel when they open their stats and see a sudden explosion in the number of hits to the site.

Or when you open your inbox, and see a whole bunch of messages from PayPal telling you that you have cash.

It feels a bit like hitting the jackpot at Vegas on the slots. The trouble is, we have to be realistic. The payouts on the slots can actually be a lot smaller than many of us hope. However, so long as we are not losing money (or in this case a lot of time and effort) we are winning the game.

Social bookmarking is one of the most potent types of Web 2.0 software used to build traffic to your website, the kind of traffic that brings thousands of new visitors to the site every day, hundreds who are willing to register, and thousands of repeat visitors on a regular basis.

With social bookmarking, the more bookmarks a website earns, the more visited it will become. So it is up to you to post great useful content, but it is also possible to promote your site quickly and easily.

When you bookmark your site using a social bookmarking website’s tool, it will give you an automatic backlink. Then, you go on to add tags to your listing. Every tag will earn you a link. That could mean getting as many as 10 to 15 backlinks for every social bookmarking site you use.

To give you an example of the potential power of this tool, say you were using 8 bookmarking sites. How many links would you get, and therefore, how much traffic could you be attracting?

By providing intelligent content, you give your visitors added reasons to come to you. But, your work does not end there. You are really not joining these websites so you can help visitors bookmark you by accident.
